The building houses a kitchen, offices, and classrooms for infants and children of preschool age. Each classroom opens to a small gathering area that then leads to a large, paved pedestrian “street.” Minor pathways intersect this walk and filter into the playground area to the west.
The lawn provides a safe surface for running and unstructured play. A low wall surrounds the play area, providing containment and privacy. The native shrubs and perennials that abut the wall include nontoxic plants with educational qualities. The playground includes sand and water play areas, tricycle tracks, traditional built playgrounds, a reading tree, covered play areas, and a vegetable garden. These features are realized through a variety of materials that encourage the growth of cognitive abilities and large motor skills.
